A month before the coronavirus shut down South Florida, public officials gathered at Miami City Hall on Feb. 18 for the street dedication ceremony in honor of community leader Jesús A. Permuy.

The newly co-designated "Jesús A. Permuy Street" spans a portion of Miami Avenue from SW 26th Road to US and includes an intersection with Brickell Avenue. The co-designation resolution was sponsored by County Commissioner Xavier Suarez and passed the Miami-Dade County Commission unanimously on Oct. 29, 2019.

The ceremony was sponsored by Coral Gables-based Permuy Architecture, founded by Jesús' eldest son, Ignacio, while the effort to name the street was spearheaded by Ignacio's eldest son, Antonio Permuy.

Event speakers were: firm president Ignacio Permuy, former DAS of Defense Pedro Pablo Permuy, former Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, Coral Gables Vice Mayor Vince Lago, and Commissioner Suarez. In attendance was the extended Permuy family, distinguished friends, and other community leaders.

Jesús Permuy is known for an extensive career as an international architect, urban planner, human rights advocate, and arts patron.
